There’s an elephant at the Logies host Robert Irwin will have to face. No, we’re not talking about an animal

“So let me get this straight,” former Sunrise host David Koch typed out on Instagram within hours of the 66th TV Week Logie Awards nominations list being published in June.

“Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter nominees for this year’s Logies contains both Today hosts but neither Sunrise hosts. A couple of facts you may have missed; Sunrise has won every single day this year … This has been going on for years. If you ever complain you’re seen as a bad sport. But now I’m out of it I can say … honestly WTF?” (No personality directly linked to Seven, which broadcasts the event, is nominated for a Gold Logie this year either).

For three days, Seven’s snubs was the biggest controversy new Logies host Robert Irwin – who is also a Gold Logie nominee, again – could have tackled if he decides to take a leaf out of former host (and fellow Gold Logie nominee) Sam Pang’s book and deliver a biting opening monologue on Sunday night. Then Nine axed Karl Stefanovic’s multimillion-dollar contract, and all bets were off. Or are they?

Tasked with making the Logies cool enough for the TikTok generation to tune in to free-to-air television, 22-year-old Irwin may have to rely on more than his in-built charm to achieve that. Perhaps he’ll reference his recent Dancing with the Stars US victory and go for an Oscars-style opening number. Maybe, like his late father Steve Irwin, he’ll bring a snake on stage. Perhaps he’ll just rip off his shirt.

Whatever his strategy, it’s unlikely the nicest guy in the country will address the fallout from the Stefanovic disaster (the former Today host, who is a nominee for the very award that kicked off Koch’s tirade, isn’t attending the event). He probably won’t touch on Kyle Sandilands’ – who joined Stefanovic in controversial independent podcaster land this week – departure from Australian Idol, done so to protect the show from activists targeting advertisers’ spend, either.

But maybe he won’t have to. Perhaps that’s why Seven’s Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington – or even Mick Molloy – have been called up to present. Maybe one of the award winners will pull a Sonia Kruger and deliver a train-wreck victory speech, and Stefanovic will finally be put to bed.
