Two teenagers accused of beating a black swan and forcing it to inhale vape fumes in a social media video are now facing further charges, after police confirmed the animal had died.
Two teenagers aged 16 and 13 from Erskine, a Mandurah suburb about 77km south of Perth, allegedly hit a black swan on its head and forced it to inhale vape fumes on an inflatable boat near Endeavour Island earlier this month.
They were charged with causing unnecessary harm to an animal.
In a further statement on Friday, Western Australia Police confirmed the swan at the centre of the alleged video had died.
“As a result of ongoing investigations into an animal cruelty incident in Mandurah earlier this month involving the death of a black swan, Mandurah Detectives identified a second alleged offence,” a police spokesman said.
Police confirmed two boys have been charged with an additional count of animal cruelty by causing an animal unnecessary harm.
The video emerged on social media earlier this month, which resulted in the schoolboys being identified and charged with animal cruelty by police.
Prosecutors alleged the pair removed a lure from the swan’s neck before one of the teens force-fed a vape into the swan’s beak.
The other teenager allegedly hit the swan on the head.
