Redmond O’Neal’s godmother has said she’s hopeful for his future “more than ever” thanks to the “work” he’s doing on himself.
The 41-year-old son of the late Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal was arrested for attempted murder and assault in May 2018, after leaving five people severely injured, including one who sustained “significant and serious stab wounds and cuts to his face, neck and upper body”, in a string of attacks, a press release said.
He was initially ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial, but the decision was reversed last year, and appearing at the LAX Airport courthouse on Thursday (13.08.26), Redmond pleaded not guilty to the charges of second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a smoking device, possession of an injection/ingestion device and two counts of possessing a controlled substance.
Redmond’s lawyer confirmed he wouldn’t make a bail motion during the hearing, so he was ordered to remain incarcerated at Patton State Hospital – under no bail without prejudice.
Redmond spoke only once during the hearing, to confirm he understood that the arraignment was being extended until October 29.
Following the arraignment on Thursday, Remond’s godmother Mela Murphy opened up about her hopes for his future, telling Us Weekly that she’s more optimistic “than ever”, and added: “He’s working the program and they are working with him. They are doing good work with him [at the hospital where is incarcerated].”
Redmond arrived late to the courtroom after his transport was delayed, and blew his godmother a kiss as he made his way to his seat.
Mela told Us Weekly that the tender move is further proof that he’s improving while under psychiatric care.
She said: “You saw him just now throwing me a kiss. He is always calling to make sure I am alright.”
During a hearing back in March, Redmond’s attorney said that he’d “found God”, and added: “The medication is working beautifully and he’s going to his life skills classes every day.
“When I ask him, ‘Are you opening up and helping others there at Patton?’ he always says, ‘Absolutely.’ He still has hope that he will get out.”
