Australian travellers are being urged to check their insurance ahead of Christmas trips to Europe amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Smartraveller issued a new update on August 12, about the continued risk for Australians travelling to or through the Middle East.
The agency stated that conflict in the region is ongoing with “miliary strikes and reprisal attacks across a number of locations. There remains a risk of escalation.”
They advise Australians to plan ahead and avoid level three, non-essential travel and transit locations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Comparison site Finder says that after looking at 22 travel insurance product disclosure statements, acts of war were general exclusions in all of them.
The general exclusion said “we will not cover any claim arising from or related to any act of war, whether declared or not, or from any rebellion, revolution, insurrection or taking power by the military.”
Smartraveller says for those in the Middle East who want to leave they continue to advise them to make plans to do so.
“If you can secure a flight and it’s safe to travel to the airport, leave while commercial flights are available,” it said.
