For years, Mumbai has been sold as the city where dreams come true. But one X user’s account of leaving the city for Bhopal makes a different case, one built around lower rent, shorter commutes, cleaner air and, most importantly, having time to actually live.

Kalyan Kumar Biswal shared his experience in a post comparing his life in Mumbai with what he found after moving to Bhopal with his wife. His list of 14 reasons quickly turned into a larger conversation about whether life in a Tier 2 city can offer a better quality of life than the relentless pace of a metro.

One of his biggest draws was housing. Biswal said he paid Rs 17,000 for a fully furnished 2BHK in a top society, complete with two air conditioners, a fridge, sofa and bed. For someone accustomed to Mumbai’s rental market, the difference alone can be significant.

Then there is the commute. Biswal claimed that most parts of Bhopal are within around 17 minutes and said he could get a cab within minutes. The shorter travel times, he suggested, have also made owning a car less necessary.

His comparison extended to everyday expenses and conveniences. He praised Bhopal’s air quality, affordable domestic help, cheaper gym memberships and movie tickets, while also pointing to the availability of services such as Blinkit and Urban Company. Food was another major part of his argument, with Biswal saying he preferred the combination of taste, affordability and cleanliness he found in Bhopal.

But the biggest difference, for him, appears to be time.

Biswal said offices in Bhopal generally wind up by 5.30 pm, allowing people to be home by early evening. That extra time has translated into a more social life too, with him describing house parties on weekday evenings as a regular feature of his new routine.

“People have time for each other,” he wrote, contrasting that with the constant rush he associated with Mumbai.

The post also touched on Bhopal’s location and connectivity, particularly its railway network, which makes journeys to cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Kolkata relatively convenient.

Not everyone, however, was convinced. Some responses pointed out that Mumbai offers a level of cosmopolitan culture, infrastructure and professional opportunities that Tier 2 cities may not match.

Others raised a different question: while Bhopal may offer a more comfortable lifestyle, would the equation remain the same for families with children who may eventually need access to wider educational and career opportunities?

For Biswal, at least, the trade-off is worth it. “The only thing I miss is Marine Drive,” he wrote. “But Bhopal is the City of Lakes, so yeah, I’m happy.”
