Nasa has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) to join its ambitious plans for a permanent human presence on the Moon, highlighting India’s growing stature as a major space power and a key partner in future lunar exploration.
The invitation comes as the US space agency accelerates plans to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028 and begin developing elements of a permanent lunar outpost by 2030 under the Artemis programme.

But why is Nasa turning to India?
According to a US government official, the answer lies in India’s rapidly expanding space capabilities and its proven track record in deep-space exploration.
“India is a formidable space power, and deeper collaboration is a natural evolution of our longstanding civil-space partnership,” the official told IndiaToday.in after discussions surrounding the proposal.
Nasa is seeking contributions from international partners as it builds the Moon Base in phases. These contributions could include scientific instruments, payloads, communications systems, robotics, navigation technologies, and other critical infrastructure needed to support long-term lunar operations.
For Nasa, partnering with Isro offers several advantages.
India has demonstrated its ability to conduct cost-effective and complex space missions, including the successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing, the Mars Orbiter Mission, and ongoing human spaceflight preparations under the Gaganyaan programme.
The invitation also reflects a broader shift in how lunar exploration is being planned. Rather than a single nation leading the effort, Nasa’s Moon Base vision relies on contributions from multiple Artemis Accords partners, creating an international ecosystem for exploration and scientific research.
The US official said recent discussions in Bengaluru provided an ideal opportunity to reiterate the invitation and explore areas of cooperation through the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group.
“The invitation has been initiated as Nasa implements President Donald Trump’s space policy and engages international partners on opportunities to contribute. Our recent discussions in Bengaluru were an opportune moment to reiterate that invitation and move another step closer to mutually beneficial lunar exploration,” the senior official added.
For India, participation could provide access to advanced lunar technologies and a direct role in shaping humanity’s future beyond Earth. Isro could potentially contribute scientific payloads, lunar surface technologies, communications systems, or even infrastructure elements for future missions.
The move also builds on growing cooperation between the two agencies. Nasa and Isro are already collaborating on projects such as the NISAR Earth-observation satellite and have strengthened ties through India’s signing of the Artemis Accords.
India is already developing the Chandrayaan-4 mission, while it is working with the Japanese space agency Jaxa to build Chandrayaan-5 mission.
As Nasa works toward establishing a permanent foothold on the Moon, the agency appears to see India not just as a partner, but as one of the countries capable of helping make that vision a reality.
