Driving range upgrades, new dedicated entertainment bays and a luxurious Mediterranean restaurant will soon be ready at Whaleback Golf Course as its $10 million redevelopment is completed.

The popular Parkwood golf course has been receiving works since early last year, after the City of Canning committed to revamping the 40-year-old facility. It is expected the upgrades will give the building a 35 to 45-year lifespan.

The $10.6 million project includes a new pod driving range featuring eight catered entertainment bays and 39 upgraded standard driving range bays, all utilising advanced simulation TrackMan technology.

TrackMan offers ball tracking, virtual courses, games and performance data to the entire range, ensuring serious golfers and free-swinging beginners are all catered for.

The entertainment precinct will also feature Mediterranean-inspired restaurant Tales Bar and Eats, transforming the former alfresco area into a modern dining venue. Whaleback is also one of the only public golf courses in WA to operate its own in-house kitchen, ensuring the menu is top quality.

Locals are invited to enter online for a chance to be among the first to dine at Tales and experience the new pod driving range at an exclusive preview in September.

Four couples will have the chance to sample the new menu at Tales Bar and Eats, while eight individual winners will experience the transformed driving range and new entertainment offering.

The competition closes August 28.

Canning mayor Patrick Hall said the redevelopment was about keeping what people love about Whaleback while cementing it as a key attraction to the wider community.

“Whaleback has been part of the Canning community for more than 40 years, and this investment is about making sure it continues to be a place people want to visit for decades to come,” he said.

“Whether you’re here for a round of golf, meeting friends for dinner, bringing the family down or having your first ever swing at the driving range, we want Whaleback to feel like a place for everyone.

“Importantly, the $10.6m redevelopment has been funded through Whaleback’s operating budgets, reinvesting in this much-loved community asset and its future.”

Mr Hall said the new precinct would help the public golf course compete with private entertainment venues.

“With plans for a new playground in the next 12 months in addition to works on the car park which will see more bays added, we’re incredibly excited for people to experience the new Whaleback,” he said.

“Long-time golfers will find plenty that is familiar, but there are now many more reasons for the wider community to come and enjoy the venue too.”
