Matthew McConaughey has shared the bizarre way Janet Jackson helped him quit smoking weed.
The Hollywood actor revealed he once smoked some particularly strong cannabis as he was preparing to drive to his birthday party but he ended up sitting in his car listening to Janet’s song That’s the Way Love Goes over and over before realising he was so late he had actually missed the whole bash.
In a video interview for Rolling Stone, Matthew said: “What a cool, groovy little tune. It’s also the reason I quit smoking weed.”
He went on to explain: “[It was] right around the time weed started turning hydroponic. A lot of y’all don’t remember, but weed used to be: you could roll a joint, smoke it, pass it around, everyone giggles, gets the munchies, and maybe runs off and tries to get some snuggle time.
“Well then it started getting this hydroponic stuff where one toke, the subplots could become unmanageable, and people would implode …
“We’d taken over the club for my birthday party. I’m gonna drive myself. Before I go, my buddy hands me this joint, he goes: ‘Here, man. Have some of this, super fun.’ I get there, and I take the toke in the car. It was not like the weed I’d smoked before …
“I listened to Janet Jackson’s That’s the Way Love Goes 24 times in a row. And when I finally got out of the car to go into my birthday party, no one was in there, ‘cause it was over. They’d all left …
“I sat in the frickin’ car listening to That’s the Way Love Goes 24 times because I thought, at the time, that that was more important than going to my own birthday party. Love the song, didn’t love the weed.”
He went on to add: “Still like the tune, though.”
Matthew previously admitted smoking weed got him into trouble in the past – and once led to him being arrested for marijuana possession while he was playing the bongos naked.
He told Playboy magazine: “I saw the cop’s eyes get big when he identified me, and it became: ‘Oh, look what we’ve got here.’
“My first call was to my mother. I was feeling guilty because I was not raised to be in jail. What’s wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit?
“I have no regrets about the way I got there. But what’s the lesson? Shut the window that has the beautiful scent of jasmine blowing in because it’s two in the morning and you might wake a neighbour.”
