Australian influencer Ruby Tuesday Matthews has caused controversy on social media after undergoing a Korean facelift in the hope of achieving a more “refreshed and awake” appearance.

The 33-year-old Byron Bay personality took to Instagram to share her “wild” recovery journey from the first three days after the surgery she had done last Friday at the Ilchi plastic surgery clinic in Seoul.

Matthews said the reason for her endoscopic lift was so she could have “snatched skin again” without changing her facial features.

The minimally invasive surgery uses a tiny camera and small hidden cuts in the hairline to lift and tighten the upper and middle parts of the face.

“Initially, I thought I’d also need eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to get that more refreshed, awake look,” she said.

“After my consultation, my surgeon felt the endoscopic lift alone could achieve what I wanted, so we decided not to do the bleph.

“The goal was never to change the way I look. I wanted to keep my face and my features — just look a little more refreshed and awake, while addressing some of the volume loss through my face.”

The morning after the four-hour surgery, Matthews returned to the clinic to have her drain and face tape removed — but not before a visit to the Apple store.

“I literally had to go to the Apple store in my pyjamas looking like this and reboot my whole phone because there was no way it was recognising my face, and I have so many locks on my phone that I couldn’t do it without face recognition,” she said.

The mother-of-three videoed herself walking around the Korean city, where she was seen struggling to open her mouth and talk properly.

On day three, Matthews’ face was extremely swollen and bruised, which she admitted was “uncomfortable”.

“My face is double the size normally; apparently, this is the worst day, so let’s hope it starts going down tomorrow,” she told her 245,000 fans.

She went on to show the tiny incisions in her hairline and was pleased to see no scarring on her face.

“It’s actually insane I’ve only got that tiny dot there…no scars on my face, literally just in my hairline and they’re neat as a pin,” she said.

“I look absolutely bat sh*t crazy, so I’m just going to have to trust the process.”

Matthews said she was sharing her facelift journey to stay honest with her social media following.

“I thought I may as well share this because there’s no point pretending that I just woke up 10 years younger and not showing you this process,” she said.

However in amongst her candidness she has received backlash for undergoing the procedure.

“Sorry but I find it sad you thought you needed to do this, one of the most gorgeous women around and at such a young age. Not a good example for women in general,” one person messaged her.

“This is a joke.

“You should be ashamed of yourself.”

Matthews hit back saying it was important for her to remain transparent with her fans and she wasn’t ashamed for being honest.

“I obviously didn’t have to share any of this, I could have disappeared for a few weeks and pretended nothing was ever done, but transparency with my community is important to me,” she said.

“I thought I was beautiful before and I still do.

“I haven’t had surgery to change my face or become someone else, I simply wanted to look a little more refreshed and my literal reference was a photo of myself five years ago.

“What you’re seeing now is swelling, not a new face, and I won’t be ashamed for being honest about something I could’ve very easily have hidden.”

Matthews said she would share the final results once the swelling calms down.
