According to a report by Axios, that is the kind of question some candidates interviewing at Anthropic, the company behind Claude, are being asked during its culture interview. And it reveals an interesting tension at one of the world’s biggest AI companies: does an employee join Anthropic for its mission, or for the potentially huge financial rewards that come with working at a fast-growing AI company? Before we go any further, it is important to note that the AI firm has built its identity around championing AI safety.

Anthropic has a culture interview as part of its hiring process, where candidates are asked about their values, moral dilemmas and how they would react to difficult situations involving AI safety. The interview is conducted by an employee nominated for the task, and the questions are suggested rather than completely scripted.
That could explain why candidates have recalled slightly different versions of the money question. One applicant told Axios that they were asked how they would feel if Anthropic abandoned some of its AI ambitions for safety reasons and that decision sent the company’s stock value to zero.
Essentially, Anthropic wants to know whether you would still believe in the company if your potentially valuable equity suddenly became worthless.
One anonymous candidate shared on workplace platform Blind that they answered honestly, saying they would not be happy if the stock went to zero, but would want to balance doing good and remaining ethical with building a sustainable business. The candidate said the interviewer did not seem to like the answer.
The question also comes as Anthropic continues to grow rapidly. CEO Dario Amodei has reportedly raised concerns about whether newer employees are joining because they believe in Anthropic’s mission or because they see a massive financial opportunity.
The question isn’t entirely hypothetical. Anthropic has already made decisions where safety has taken priority over potentially lucrative business opportunities.
The company previously refused to give the US military unrestricted access to its technology, a move that resulted in the loss of government contracts. It has also restricted access to Mythos, one of its most capable cybersecurity models, because of safety concerns.
Anthropic’s careers page makes the company’s position clear: the mission comes first. The culture interview appears to be an attempt to find people who genuinely agree with that philosophy.
But there is an amusing contradiction here. Some candidates are reportedly spending thousands of dollars on private coaching and mock interviews to prepare for Anthropic’s hiring process. In other words, people are spending serious money to prove they are not joining the company just for the money.
