Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Ali G movie will feature Morgana Robinson as the character’s pregnant girlfriend Julie.
The 54-year-old actor and comedian is returning as Ali G in Ali G: Who Iz I?, which will be released in cinemas on October 23 by Amazon MGM Studios, with the mockumentary – which is Sacha’s feature directorial debut – following Ali as he heads to America after discovering Julie is eight months pregnant, with TV comic Morgana, 44, taking over the role previously played by EastEnders actress Kellie Bright, 50.
The trailer shows Ali struggling with the prospect of fatherhood while declaring that the world has deteriorated during his lengthy absence.
Sacha, in character as Ali, says: “I’ve been gone for 20 years, chilling.
“And in that time, the world went to c***.
“There’s been Wars. Covid. And Ed Sheeran.”
Ed Sheeran is only one of the contemporary targets referenced as Ali attempts to re-establish himself more than two decades after his first feature film.
Ali then announces his plan to embrace documentary filmmaking, saying: “I’m going to get back on top with a brand new thing called a ‘documentary’.
“For the first time ever, this is with real people not actors. For more than a year we let the cameras follow me everywhere.
“Nothing was off limits.”
The new film returns Sacha to the mixture of fictional character comedy and encounters with real people that became central to his biggest successes, including Borat and Brüno.
The trailer includes Ali interacting with unsuspecting subjects as the cameras supposedly document his life.
Morgana secretly filmed as Julie alongside Sacha over the course of a year.
The actress and impressionist is known for programs including The Morgana Show and Morgana Robinson’s The Agency, as well as appearances in House of Fools and Toast of London.
Julie’s pregnancy provides part of the new film’s storyline.
One scene shows the couple at a medical appointment, where Ali attempts to persuade the doctor to say that his visibly pregnant girlfriend is simply “bloated”.
Another shows him putting a positive pregnancy test into his mouth and pretending to use it as a vape.
Kellie originally played Julie opposite Sacha in 2002’s Ali G Indahouse, before becoming best known to millions of viewers as Linda Carter in BBC soap EastEnders.
Ali G first appeared on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998 before Sacha took the character into Da Ali G Show.
The spoof interviewer became known for conducting deliberately absurd conversations with politicians and public figures, including Donald Trump and astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Sacha later found worldwide success with another Da Ali G Show character in 2006’s Borat, before returning to the role for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm in 2020.
His other major credits include Brüno, The Dictator, Les Misérables, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and his Oscar-nominated performance as Abbie Hoffman in The Trial of the Chicago 7.
The Ali G comeback has already extended beyond the new movie.
Sacha unexpectedly appeared in character at the Wimbledon men’s singles final on July 12, wearing Ali’s trademark yellow-tinted glasses, skull cap and gold jewelry with a Wimbledon tracksuit top.
The film also follows a busy year on screen for Sacha, who appeared opposite Rosamund Pike in the Netflix comedy Ladies First and featured in Peter Farrelly’s Balls Up.
