NSW Swifts’ hopes of returning to the Super Netball summit have received a huge boost with Diamonds defender Matilda Garrett signing for the upcoming season.
The three-time premiership winner has inked a deal with the Sydney-based side, which will see her move from reigning champions Adelaide Thunderbirds.
Garrett has been an integral part of Adelaide’s dynasty and earned her Diamonds debut in 2023, before winning bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“I’ve had such an incredible six years in Adelaide, and I’m really grateful for everything the Thunderbirds have given me, but I feel ready for a new challenge,” she said in a statement.
“I’m really looking forward to getting into the environment, meeting the girls and working with Dylan (Nexhip) and the coaching staff.”
Garrett’s signature completes the Swifts’ roster for 2027 and comes after the club missed out on finals last season, continuing their five-year title drought.
With fellow Diamond Sarah Klau and Melbourne Vixens import Rudi Ellis, NSW will have one of the most intimidating defences in the league, while also boasting Ugandan superstar Mary Cholhok after she signed with the side following Grace Nweke’s departure.
Elsewhere, defender Kate Eddy became the fifth player to leave the Vixens.
In a statement, Eddy said she was “heartbroken” and it was later revealed in the media the 29-year-old had been in contract talks but the club decided to pull her offer.
With almost all teams either full or close to completing their rosters, the defender, who won the Vixens’ Player’s Player award last season, is now in limbo as she looks to salvage her career.
Ahead of the transfer window closing on Friday, the Melbourne Mavericks completed their squad by re-signing Jessie Grenvold after a breakout campaign while Jamaican international Kadie-Ann Dehaney inked a new deal with the West Coast Fever.
The Sydney Sirens also announced midcourter Molly Jovic as their third signing after she missed last season following the birth of her first child.
“The last couple of years have taught me that life doesn’t always unfold exactly how you expect it to, but sometimes the opportunities that come your way end up being even better than you could have imagined,” Jovic said.
“Having been part of an inaugural team (Mavericks) before, I know how special those early years can be.”
