Sean Penn told John Leguizamo his then-wife Madonna had a crush on him.
The two actors were shooting 1989 war drama Casualties of War when Sean made a confession to his stunned co-star, who got his start in the industry as an extra in the Vogue hitmaker’s music video for her single Borderline.
John recalled to Kelly Ripa on the latest episode of her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast: “I was like, ‘What? Oh, wow. Word.
“But I was otherwise engaged. But so was she, because she was married to Sean.”
Sean and Madonna married in 1985 but divorced in January 1989, months before the release of Casualties of War.
While Madonna had a crush on him, John, 66, admitted he “didn’t even meet her” while shooting the Borderline video, though they went on to strike up a friendship in later years.
The Romeo and Juliet star – who has children Allegra, 27, and Lucas, 26, with second wife Justine Maurer – shared: “She’s invited me to her house a couple times for dinners.
“I had dinner with her in London, in her townhouse, and then we had dinner with her in her townhouse here in Manhattan.”
On one particularly memorable occasion, Lenny Kravitz was also in attendance for dinner.
John said: “We sat down to dinner and she had like incredible paintings. The food was delicious and she sat at head of the table.”
Though the Odyssey actor wasn’t among the stars to have a cameo in Madonna’s recent music video for Danceteria, he admitted he would have offered an enthusiastic “Hell yeah” if he’d been asked.
Meanwhile, John previously reflected on how he ended his feud with Patrick Swayze in a “polite way” before the actor’s death in 2009.
The pair famously fell out while making 1995 movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar but John has now revealed they eventually put the bad blood behind them through a series of letters which was passed between their publicists.
He told People magazine: “We were never in the same location, so that was kind of difficult. I’m a New Yorker and he was West Coast.
“But we did contact each other through letters and publicists; the polite way of doing it. And we made up. It would’ve been better in person, obviously.”
John previously opened up about the spat with Swayze – who died aged 57 in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer – in his book Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas, and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends: My Life, revealing the pair almost got into a physical fight after falling out.
He later expanded on their tempestuous relationship admitting the actir was “insecure”, “neurotic” and “difficult” to work with.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s ‘Andy Cohen Live’, the host said: “All I hear about Patrick Swayze was just what an absolute angel he was” and Leguizamo replied: “Hmm, that’s different than what I experienced … Rest in peace, I love him. He was just neurotic. And I’m neurotic too, but I don’t know, he was just – it was difficult working with him.”
