Tom Baker has booked a graveyard plot at a church near his former home.
The former Doctor Who star, 92, explained that he already has arrangements in place for when he meets his maker – although he is still working for the time with a role in the audiobook series Sir Sherlock: The Red Letter Day.
Tom told The Oldie magazine: “I had the gravestone made with ‘Tom Baker 1934-‘ on it. The last date is ready to be chiselled in. It’s ready and waiting. I hope someone doesn’t fill it in without asking me. That would be rather rude.
“But, as for now, other people can give me an epitaph. I don’t have time – I’m too busy working!”
Tom plays an elderly version of Sherlock in his latest project, which sees him reunite with John Leeson (who voiced the robotic dog K9 in Doctor Who), and he thinks there are lots of similarities between the Time Lord and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth.
The actor, who portrayed the Fourth Doctor in the long-running BBC sci-fi series from 1974 to 1981, said: “There’s an ease about working with John. We still meet up and pass the time of day together. So reuniting with him for Sir Sherlock felt very comfortable and we still spar off each other.
“When you think about the Doctor and K9, there is something of the Holmes and Watson relationship – probably reversed. K9 is the factual, analytical and methodical one. The Doctor is more prone to random acts.
“I’m just projecting here. Stick a deerstalker on K9 and give his nose a laser and a pipe – and there’s a whole new TV series for you!”
Tom was awarded an MBE for services to television last year and enjoyed the “splendid” investiture ceremony at Kent’s Hole Park – which was attended by his Doctor Who co-star Louise Jameson and fans of the show.
He said: “Well, it was very nice and always nice to be recognised. I had the most splendid day at Hole Park, which isn’t a golf course but sounds like one.
“Dear Louise Jameson (who played the Doctor’s companion, Leela) and an assortment of Doctor Who fans were there also. It was very agreeable.”
