Caleb Shomo has admitted he “faced a lot of homophobia” after coming out as gay.
The Beartooth rocker filed for divorce from Fleur Shomo, his wife of nearly 14 years, last month – two months after revealing the truth about his sexuality and announcing himself as a “proud gay man”.
Caleb, 33, has now opened up about the reaction to his announcement, as he said during an interview on the Breakdown with Nath Johnny podcast: “I’m going to just do what I wanna do. I’m gonna wear what I wanna wear. I’m gonna sing how I wanna sing.
“I’m gonna look how I wanna look and just enjoy being an artist that’s allowed to do that, and that has the freedom to do that.
“And that was met with a lot of opposition and a lot of … I mean, really, just a lot of homophobia, and a lot of people who really were not okay with me presenting that way at all, with what I was doing, any of it.”
Caleb went on to say that he was “going through so much” at the time, so he decided to take a break from the Internet “for a while”.
In addition, he had to do his best to put the backlash behind him in order to concentrate on his music career.
He explained: “I mean, a lot of the day I’d be spent in a really, really bad place and just trying to find enough energy and enough will to get myself warmed up and get on that stage and do my f****** job.
“And it didn’t really change as we kept releasing more songs, and the very vocal opposition continued and still continues to.“And, yeah, me coming out didn’t help that. And just being honest with people about who I am and what’s been going on.”
He’s now taking “baby steps” when it comes to working on his upcoming record, teasing that he has “a lot” to “work through” on the album.
Caleb and Fleur, an actress who has appeared in the medical drama The Pitt, jointly filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court in July, according to court documents.
The couple, who married in 2012 after dating for around two years, listed their date of separation as 27 March. They have no children.
The filing follows Caleb’s public statement in May addressing speculation surrounding his personal life, and Fleur’s subsequent message supporting him while also describing the end of their marriage as “disorientating and hurtful”.
