Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone could be much closer to launch than some recent reports suggested. With Apple’s September 9 event now less than a week away, Mark Gurman has shared new details about the device with Tom’s Guide, including its screen sizes, durability, software features and expected release window.
The foldable, which is widely expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, is tipped to arrive alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, or shortly after them. Gurman said he would be “very surprised” if Apple’s foldable did not launch at the same time as the new Pro models or within a few weeks.

This matters because earlier reports raised the possibility of a much later retail release due to manufacturing and supply-chain challenges. Gurman, however, does not expect the phone to be delayed until late October or November.
Two displays, new hinge and MagSafe
The new foldable is said to take a book-style approach, with a 5.5-inch display on the outside and a much larger 7.8-inch screen when opened. Gurman also says the phone will use Apple’s latest Pro chip and modem, without naming the components.
Another area where Apple appears to be focusing heavily is durability. The company is reportedly developing a liquid-metal hinge and working to make the foldable as durable as its conventional iPhones.
“The spec for Apple was to make the foldable phone as durable or at least close to it as any other iPhone.”
The display itself may not completely eliminate the visible folding line, despite earlier reports describing it as a “crease-less” screen. Gurman says the crease could be comparable to the latest Samsung foldables and may even be less noticeable.
Apple is also expected to retain one of its most familiar iPhone accessories. Addressing speculation that the foldable could lose MagSafe because of its design, Gurman said: “MagSafe is there. Yeah, all indications that I’ve heard is that MagSafe is in for this foldable phone.”
iOS 27 could make the bigger screen more useful
The larger internal display is expected to get software features designed specifically for a foldable form factor. iOS 27 is reportedly being prepared with iPad-like layouts and side-by-side app support.
Gurman has now revealed another addition: users will reportedly be able to drag and drop content between apps that are open on the screen. This could make the foldable more useful for tasks that involve moving information between multiple applications.
Price could cross $2,000
The biggest hurdle for buyers may be the price. Gurman continues to expect the foldable iPhone to start at more than $2,000, potentially making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.
Apple has not officially confirmed the foldable, its name, specifications or price. The company is expected to reveal more at its September 9 event, where the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is also expected to make its debut.
