Race 1: MIDWAY HANDICAP (1400M)
1. Felix Majestic has run himself back into form in stronger races and is in a Midway where there doesn’t appear to be a lot of competition for the front. Don’t mind him drawn out a bit as he’s taken 100m or so to wind up out of the gates, if that early part works out for him he’s a big chance to break through. 16. Vexxy is eligible for much easier races but she showed she’s up to this grade already with a slashing fifth in the 1200m Midway a couple of weeks ago. Interesting to see if she can back it up from a much better gate. 3. Dusty Bay reacted really well to being ridden off the speed when scoring at Warwick Farm three runs back. Just fair at Rosehill last time out when he hit the front early in the straight and boxed on well for third. Every chance with the smother draw. 4. Long Legs was expected to fare better when resuming two weeks ago, she may have had some excuses, but a couple got past her late. Better off at this trip, blinkers on, so she could be an improver.
How to play it: Felix Majestic to win.
Race 2: BUY YOUR KOSCIUSZKO TICKETS AT TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1200M)
4. Mrs Goldberg was nothing short of dominant in scoring first-up in the Highway two weeks ago. She did have a nice run just ahead of the midfield but you couldn’t be anything but impressed with how she put them away. Similarly drawn and 1200m holds no fears. Hard to beat. 11. Lord Remlap is a promising type unbeaten in three starts including a Highway in April, where he almost threw it away. Barrier is a worry but he’s trialling well and with a bit of luck, he’s a threat. 20. Empress Tsarina stuck to her guns when chasing Mrs Goldberg in her best performance. Draws kindly and she’s an each-way chance. 2. Wayburn is another drawn a shade awkwardly, but he reacted well to being ridden off the pace when scoring at Rosehill five weeks ago. In the mix.
How to play it: Mrs Goldberg to win.
Race 3: LAUREL OAK SUPPORTER OF NJT HANDICAP (1100M)
9. Scenic Point was heavily backed before being a late scratching at the barriers from a Warwick Farm engagement a few weeks ago. Back to the trials and looked pretty slick. She was a Listed winner last year for the previous stable and on what we’ve seen from her trials she can be a major player. 1. Kimberley Secrets continues to race well in this company. A game second at Rosehill last week when she tried hard to run down Oh Arthur and just failed. She’ll put herself there and give a good sight again. 3. Ernaux comes back 100m from her past few starts which have realised a win and two seconds. Racing well and drawn to get the last shot at them, which is very much her most effective style. 7. Island Dec is resuming from a two-month absence and she’s the type that could blouse them late, as she did at Canterbury two starts ago, with the right sort of run.
How to play it: Scenic Point to win.
Race 4: DRINKWISE CUP (2400M)
1. Thebudgiesmugla brings an imposing 2400m record of five from five into this and that makes him tough to beat. Would love a bit more sting out of the ground for him, but he was more than acceptable fresh in the Premiers Cup at 2000m, has a positive racing style and he runs the trip. 2. So You Are has done battle with his now stablemate three times and has a 1-2 record with the Premiers Cup his first “victory” as he ran a handy second. Has that habit of finding one or two better but in a race of few chances on paper he will be right there. 3. Sam Hawkens faces something of a D-Day. He’s been disappointing since he arrived about a year ago and couldn’t keep up with the tempo on speed fresh a month ago. Much better suited at this trip and he’s entitled to show something. 5. Fernao is racing well in Brisbane of late with three seconds on end. Started $71 when he last raced Thebusdgiesmugla but back down in the weights he’s a chance.
How to play it: Thebudgiesmugla to win.
Race 5: TAB HANDICAP (1200M)
3. Alabama State is due a change of luck after two good runs from a spell in similar races. Trapped wide second-up back in the field in a slowly run race and has kept coming to be beaten a length. Draws a little better this time, should be nice and fit. Does prefer a dry track. Good each-way prospect. 14. Off The Press ran a promising race when resuming at Rosehill with a close second and he has won three from four when second-up. Can see him getting a nice run and no surprise to see him in the finish. 20. Rose Aye was hard in the market when she resumed a month ago, she led and knocked up a bit late when running fifth behind Ernaux. She’ll be fitter for it, won’t have to work as hard from the draw and is worth considering. 2. Bartolf wasn’t disgraced despite never being a winning chance first-up two weeks ago. Can improve quickly.
How To Play It: Alabama State each-way.
Race 6: KIA ORA STUD FURIOUS STAKES (1200M)
2. Pembrey was impressive winning the Silver Shadow first-up against several of her rivals in this. She ran fast and didn’t look like stopping. It’s quite a benchmark to set for returning to the same track and distance. If she has improvement in her then she’ll probably be too slick again. 3. Chilly Girl is new opposition for Pembrey and she was very good in her own right winning the Rosebud, running down Blue Door. Drawn to stalk and is the logical danger. Can’t wait to see 6. Bangkok Hottie at 1400m and beyond. She was excellent running on from the back in the Silver Shadow into second and we can expect something similar. 1. Chayan started favourite in the Golden Slipper after she won the Reisling Stakes in a canter. She’s since been sold for $5.6 million. Not sure where she finds herself from the outside but she’s looking in good order and will improve.
How To Play It: Pembrey to win.
Race 7: MYPLATES TRAMWAY STAKES (1400M)
7. Idle Flyer is not a noted first-up performer so her effort in the Winx Stakes is more than a pass mark in the context of this race. She’s won four from four second-up and while she stays at 1400m you’d argue this is a step back in grade, despite some quality opposition, and if she’s within a couple coming up the rise will be tough to hold out. 5. Private Eye is a marvel. Tried hard when runner-up to Cosmic Crusader in the PB Lawrence at Caulfield and while drawn the outside here he might just get a favour or two up front. A top four finish sees him pass $13m in prizemoney and you’d imagine he’ll achieve that at least. 3. Attica was more than acceptable first-up behind the in-form Althoff. He was a solid favourite there and while he couldn’t match the winner’s dash with 7kg less it was a good starting point. Fitter and he can be dangerous. 1. Headley Grange can’t be discounted, he was excellent without winning against the A grade in the Sydney autumn before his Group 1 win in Brisbane. Definite chance.
How To Play It: Idle Flyer to win.
Race 8: CATANACH’S JEWELLERS CONCORDE STAKES (1000M)
4. Tempted on top and while she might be a little vulnerable with 58kg at the short trip fresh we know she’s a high-class mare. Only defeat in six starts at Randwick was at the hands of Ka Ying Rising in the TAB Everest last year, not a bad recommendation. She’s trialling well, unbeaten first-up and drawn perfectly. 1. Headwall won this race last year and hasn’t raced since. He’s had a solid grounding with four trials since June and should have reasonable fitness levels. Six of his seven wins are at 1000m so he’s in his zone. 2. Marhoona won the Galaxy in the autumn and she’s also resuming since the Arrowfield where she ran fourth behind Tempted. She was narrowly beaten in the Challenge over this course in March. Sure to be competitive as always. 5. Roselyn’s Star has a bit of race fitness from an impressive win in the July Sprint six weeks ago. Trialled sharply and while this is the toughest race he’s contested, he has a great record.
How To Play It: Tempted to win.
Race 9: ASAHI SUPER DRY CHELMSFORD STAKES (1600M)
2. Lindermann has a lovely set up to bounce back to form after a below par run in the Winx Stakes first-up. He did something similar a year ago before beating Sir Delius in this race. Hard to knock his autumn form despite not winning, placings to Autumn Glow and Aeliana before being runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth ahead of Autumn Glow. Had a brilliant spring last year, he’s a dry tracker and will take running down. 1. Ceolwulf tends to keep improving through his preparation but he started his spring with an excellent fifth in the Winx, attacking the line nicely. Doesn’t look a fast race on paper which might be against him but he is entitled to be breathing down their necks. 7. Green Spaces will excel at 2000m and above, but he too was excellent in the Winx picking up some late ground at the end of the 1400m. No shock if he’s in the first four home. 9. Fangirl was disappointing in the Winx. She’s been a wonderful mare over many seasons, she’ll need to lift on that last run but you’ve got to have concerns. Anywhere near her best and she goes close.
How To Play It: Lindermann to win.
Race 10: THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1600M)
9. The Mona Lisa has been a revelation in the past couple of months and while she’s up in class she has found another winnable race over the Randwick mile. She had to do a lot of chasing behind a tearaway leader when we last saw her a month ago and she picked him up and was still strong to the line. Gets some weight relief and has the tactical ability to offset the gate. Can’t see her doing anything else but running well. 8. Starzintheireyes might turn out to be the best horse here over a bit more ground but 1600m gives him a big chance to post his first local win. He couldn’t be trialling better leading into this and any support would be a significant pointer. 13. Watson has gate one which might help him after working a bit in the Goulburn Cup early from a wider gate. He didn’t dash when he hit the front and that’s a little concern but entitled to another chance. 10. Starphistocated comes through the same race and she drew the outside there and was never in the hunt. Runner-up at Group 3 mares level over the Randwick mile in March.
How To Play It: The Mona Lisa each-way.
