Sandra Bullock’s decision making is guided by her teenage son.
The Practical Magic 2 actress is “unbelievably proud” of 16-year-old Louis and 12-year-old Laila, and has found that as they have grown older, they have become a big “influence” on her in different ways.
She told Access Hollywood: “I am unbelievably proud, unbelievably proud [of mychildren].
“And what’s amazing, is that something happens when you have kids where you stop being the influence on them, and they become the influence on you.
“Louis’ my steadfast, moral barometer. I’m always like, ‘What would Louis do?’ And when it comes to like spotting things and thinking forward, it’s Lai. It’s just like, they’re so completely different but yet they just give me two halves of a whole.”
The 62-year-old star revealed her kids have cameo roles in her latest film, Practical Magic 2.
She said: “They’re in the movie but not in an obvious way to you, not in an obvious way. And so I can’t wait to show them where it is. They don’t know where it is.”
In August 2023, Sandra’s partner Bryan Randall passed away after three years battling the terminal neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and she recently reflected on how her children coped with the photographer’s illness.
Speaking on the SmartLess podcast about how her kids were when Bryan was battling the disease, she said: “Oh, completely aware. Absolutely aware, because eventually, once there is a situation where you’re bedridden, we all have to go there.
“It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it.
“They could see. They have eyes. And they are very, very astute kids.”
The Speed actress admitted she “felt the guilt” asking for help from her children amid Bryan’s illness.
She added: “They not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behaviour that changes in all of us.
“Louis handled it very differently than Laila.
“About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around. So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’
“I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time.
“I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f***** anyway and people are suffering everywhere.
“So me asking for help, I felt the guilt because everyone else was already suffering.
“But he chose to just be there and support and help me on the things that were easy for me.”
Sandra told how Laila coped differently, admitting she was “more bonded until about six months out”.
She added: “And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’
“And I said, ‘But if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’ “
