Britain’s King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla will host Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq at Windsor Castle for a state visit next month, Buckingham Palace says.
The visit from October 20 to 22 will come against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East since US-Israeli attacks on Iran in February, which prompted retaliatory strikes on Israel and Gulf states that host US bases.
So far this year, the British royals have hosted state visits by US President Donald Trump in April and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in March.
The last state visit by a sultan of Oman to the UK was in March 1982 when Queen Elizabeth Il hosted Oman’s previous leader Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
Charles has made four official visits to Oman, the last in January 2020 when he travelled to Muscat to offer condolences after the death of Sultan Qaboos.
As the Prince of Wales he visited the Middle Eastern country with his wife in 2016 for a two-day trip.
