A Perth influencer and activewear business owner has had an aggressive skin cancer removed, prompting an urgent warning to her social media fans — “get your skin checked”.
Kia Buckley, the founder of viral fitness brand Kikiva, took to social media on Friday to share just how quickly one’s life can change after receiving bad news.
The 24-year-old posted a TikTok video that revealed she had been diagnosed with an aggressive skin cancer and needed to have it removed immediately.
The video — captioned “Life changes so quickly wow” — featured a photo of Buckley going about her normal day before it flicked to a photo of her about to undergo an operation.
“You really can go from this one day to then getting told you have aggressive skin cancer and need to undergo treatment at 24,” she said.
Her scary ordeal prompted an urgent warning to her more than 136,000 TikTok followers, encouraging them to get regular skin checks.
“Please, I pray that you go and get your skin checked because if I went two months later, it would have gone into my blood,” she said.
“So by posting this, I hope you go get your skin checked because it can save your life.
The video has been seen by more than 69,000 people, with her fans flooding the comments section with well wishes for her recovery.
Perth influencer Rahnee Bransby said: “Such an important message, Kia! Hope you’re okay.”
A skin cancer nurse thanked Buckley for sharing her update, saying: “Skin checks are so important. Wishing you all the best.”
Several other followers said they would be booking in for a skin check after seeing her video.
“My sign to get my skin checked,” one person said.
Another said: “Oh Kia I’m sending all my love. Will be getting my skin checked.”
The diagnosis comes after Buckley opened her first retail store at Karrinyup Shopping Centre on August 1 which she described as a “dream come true”.
“Four years ago, this was just a dream written in my diary. Today, it’s a reality because of every single person who has supported us along the way,” she said.
“I can’t wait to welcome you to the world of Kikiva (I can’t stop crying).”
