BMW i5 Long Wheelbase launched at Rs 79.60 lakh in India, offers 669km range

BMW India has launched the i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India at an introductory price of Rs 79.60 lakh (ex-showroom). The new electric sedan is the company’s first locally produced electric sedan in India and will be manufactured at BMW Group’s Chennai plant. Deliveries have already commenced.

The BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport is priced at Rs 79.60 lakh, while the limited-run First Edition is also priced at Rs 79.60 lakh. BMW says all 99 units of the First Edition were sold out before the official launch.

At 5,175mm long, 2,156mm wide and 1,520mm tall, with a 3,105mm wheelbase, the i5 LWB is positioned as one of the largest cars in its segment. BMW says the extended wheelbase has been designed specifically to offer greater rear-seat space and chauffeur-focused comfort.

BMW i5 LWB: Design and features

The i5 LWB gets BMW’s latest design language, with a prominent kidney grille featuring illuminated lighting, adaptive LED headlights and slim L-shaped LED taillights. The sedan rides on 20-inch M alloy wheels and also gets flush-fitting door handles and a revised Hofmeister kink.

Inside, the i5 LWB gets BMW’s curved display, comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. Other highlights include an illuminated BMW Interaction Bar, CraftedClarity crystal elements, four-zone climate control, front-seat ventilation and a Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof.

The cabin is finished with fully vegan Veganza upholstery. A Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system is also available, while the First Edition adds a dedicated rear-seat entertainment package with a tablet and tablet holder.

The First Edition further gets BMW Individual Silver Bronze accents, Fineline open-pored fine-wood trim and a ‘FIRST EDITION’ engraving on the dashboard. It is offered exclusively with a Carbon Black Metallic exterior and Titanium Bronze accents.

669km claimed range

Powering the i5 eDrive35L is an 81.6kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor. The powertrain produces 268bhp and 410Nm of torque, allowing the sedan to accelerate from 0-100kmph in 6.7 seconds. Top speed is rated at 195kmph.

BMW claims a range of up to 669km on the MIDC cycle. The i5 LWB supports DC fast charging at up to 160kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80% in 33 minutes. It also supports AC charging at up to 11kW.

BMW will provide a wallbox charger with the car, including installation.

Air suspension and rear-seat comfort

The BMW i5 LWB has been equipped with adaptive rear-axle air suspension and increased ground clearance, with the setup tuned for Indian road conditions. The company says the suspension is designed to improve ride comfort while maintaining the driving dynamics associated with BMW models.

The sedan also gets a 50:50 weight distribution and multiple driving modes, including Personal, Efficient, Sport, Expressive, Relax and Digital Art.

In terms of safety and driver assistance, the i5 LWB comes with features such as adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, Parking Assistant Professional, Reverse Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Cross Traffic Warning, Front and Rear Collision Warning, Exit Warning and Active Pedestrian Protection. It also gets eight airbags.

The BMW i5 LWB is available in four exterior colours: Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Carbon Black and Oxide Grey.

BMW is offering a two-year/unlimited-kilometre standard warranty, while the high-voltage battery gets an eight-year/160,000km warranty. The company is also offering an assured buyback value of 55% after four years under its BMW Smart Finance programme.
