Rory Kinnear is convinced the next actor to play 007 will be a surprise because the producers tend to pick someone who isn’t “being talked about”.
The 48-year-old actor played MI6 agent Bill Tanner in four Bond films – Quantum of Solace, Skyfall,, Spectre and No Time to Die – alongside Daniel Craig as Bond and the hunt is currently on for another star to take on the lead role after Craig walked away from the franchise.
However, Rory is convinced rumours swirling around actors such as Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson and Jack Lowden are unlikely to be true. He told The Sunday Times newspaper: “It does tend to be people who aren’t being talked about.”
The new Bond film will be the first to be released by Amazon MGM Studios following the departure of longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli – and Rory doesn’t know if he will be given the chance to return.
He told the publication: “That’s the exciting thing. I’m sure they’ll want to hold on to some continuity, what it means to people. But there’ll be a whole different approach. … If they ask me, yes [I will take part].”
It comes after James Bond’s former casting director Debbie McWilliams – who cast 13 Bond films – insisted the new 007 needs to be played by an actor who does not have a high profile.
She told The Independent newspaper: “It is absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma. I don’t want to see any of them [Turner, Dickinson or Elordi] as James Bond because we now know so much about them …
“We want to know as little about them [the actor] personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives.
“We never want to see him at home. And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience.”
McWilliams – who retired from her role as James Bond’s casting director shortly before Amazon MGM Studios took over – went on to add she wants to see the role given to “somebody who is completely out of the blue”.
