For students dreaming of pursuing a master’s degree in Europe, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship offers an opportunity to study across countries while receiving substantial financial support.
Funded by the European Union, the prestigious programme brings together higher education institutions from different countries to offer international master’s courses that combine academic learning with mobility, research, traineeships and exposure to diverse cultures.

. Unlike a conventional master’s programme based in a single university or country, Erasmus Mundus allows selected students to move between participating institutions as part of their course, giving them the chance to experience multiple academic systems during the same degree.
WHAT IS THE ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIP?
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are international master’s programmes jointly designed and delivered by consortia of higher education institutions.
These programmes involve at least three higher education institutions from at least three different countries, along with associated academic and non-academic partners. Depending on the course, students may undertake periods of study, research, traineeships, thesis preparation and defence in different locations.
A key feature of the programme is its international mobility. Students are generally required to study in at least two different European countries, with some programmes also involving partner institutions in other parts of the world.
The master’s programmes typically run for one to two academic years and carry 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
SCHOLARSHIP COVERS TUITION, TRAVEL AND LIVING COSTS
One of the biggest attractions of Erasmus Mundus is its comprehensive financial support.
Selected scholarship holders can receive a monthly allowance of €1,400 for up to 24 months. The scholarship also covers participation costs, including tuition and other academic expenses such as library costs and insurance.
In addition, students receive contributions towards travel and installation costs, as well as support related to visas.
This makes the programme particularly attractive for students who want to pursue an international master’s degree without taking on the full financial burden of studying abroad.
WHAT DEGREE DO STUDENTS RECEIVE?
Students completing an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master can receive either a joint degree or multiple degrees, depending on the programme.
A joint degree consists of a single degree certificate issued on behalf of at least two higher education institutions. In the case of multiple degrees, students receive at least two degree certificates from two higher education institutions belonging to the consortium.
The exact degree arrangement is defined in the study agreement with the relevant Erasmus Mundus Joint Master at the beginning of the programme.
WHO CAN APPLY
The scholarship is open to students from around the world, including both EU and non-EU citizens.
Applicants must generally hold a bachelor’s degree or be in the final year of their bachelor’s programme, provided they graduate before the master’s programme begins.
Students with a bachelor’s-equivalent level of learning may also be eligible, provided the qualification is officially recognised according to the national rules of the degree-awarding country.
Language requirements vary depending on the course. Applicants may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through tests such as IELTS, with individual programmes setting their own specific requirements.
WHEN DO APPLICATIONS OPEN?
There is no single application deadline for every Erasmus Mundus Joint Master. A new selection of programmes is added to the Erasmus Mundus list each year, and applicants need to apply directly to the individual master’s programme.
In most cases, applications are submitted between October and January for courses beginning in the following academic year.
Each master’s programme has its own website containing information about participating universities, course structure, eligibility criteria, language requirements and the application process. Students can also apply for programmes without the scholarship, depending on the individual course.
For the 2026–2028 academic cycle, 75 Indian students have been awarded the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) scholarships. According to the Delegation of the European Union to India and Bhutan, India remains the top recipient of these scholarships since the programme began in 2004 and is among the top three recipient countries globally for this year’s intake.
