A 34-year-old mother had just picked up children from school when her 4WD ran off the road and rolled in Melbourne’s west on Tuesday afternoon, leaving two children dead and six people injured.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Nerowie and Parwan-Exford roads near Bacchus Marsh just before 4pm on Tuesday.
A seven-year-old girl died at the scene. An 11-year-old boy died overnight in hospital, police said early on Wednesday.
Five other children remain in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the female driver was also taken to hospital for observation.
Detective Sergeant Tony Gentile said police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
“From my understanding, the scene was quite hectic, people everywhere. Witnesses who witnessed it, they stopped and rendered assistance,” he said.
“Obviously, with seven children, they were distressed, and they were cared for by paramedics, members of the public and police.”
“This is just a really sad set of circumstances. Really very sad.”
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact police.
In May 2023, 13 children were taken to hospital after a truck hit a school bus carrying 45 primary school students on the same road.
Seven children were left with serious injuries, including one 10-year-old who lost her arm.
