A P-plater has been fined more than $1000 for using his knees to drive a car while trying to butter a bagel.
The bizarre incident, which was captured on police bodycam footage, took place at around 3.50pm on Monday after officers noticed the driver using his knees to steer a silver Honda HR-V along Tor Street in Newtown, Toowoomba.
After conducting a traffic stop, police approached the vehicle, being driven by a 29-year-old Glenvale man, in an effort to get to the bottom of what exactly was going on.
“Can you explain for me why, in four lines of traffic, that are quite busy at this time of day, that you thought steering a motor vehicle on your Ps, with your knees, while you buttered a bagel would be a great idea?” he said.
The man replied by saying he knew it was “stupid” but he was also “hungry” because he had been “working since morning”.
“I just can’t understand how you thought that was going to be a great idea, in all that traffic” the officer said.
Police also told the man his car registration had expired.
Darling Downs District Officer Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen said taking your hands off the wheel, “even for something as seemingly harmless like preparing food,” could have serious consequences.
“I want to remind motorists there is no meal, message or other distraction worth risking your safety or the safety of other road users,” she said.
“If you’re driving, keep your attention on the road and your hands where they belong – on the wheel.”
