Tim Tszyu is planning to return to the ring again this year and join new cornerman Jeff Fenech as a two-division world champion.
Barely six weeks since upsetting American superstar Errol Spence Jnr, Tszyu’s team is in talks to bring 43-year-old WBA middleweight champ Erislandy Lara to Australia in December.
Tsyzu has held the WBO’s super welterweight crown and, with his stocks rising again, can realistically join Fenech and Liam Paro as Australia’s only multiple-division champions in boxing’s ‘Big Four’ organisations.
“We sat down, spoke about our options and to become a two-time world champion that was part of the plan,” Tszyu told reporters from Thailand, where he has resumed training, on Wednesday.
“That’s what I’m chasing, that’s what we’re hoping for. It’s very big legacy part.
“Australia’s had a lot of different world champions, not many have (won in two divisions). Liam Paro was the second and I’m attempting to be the third.”
He talked up the prospect of fights against Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn – the pair headline a card featuring Australian Jai Opetaia in Las Vegas on Sunday (AEST) – and said a date with American superstar Jermell Charlo remained “unfinished business”.
But he said a quest for two-division gold was the priority, declaring: “I’d rather fight for a world title”.
Cuban-American veteran Lara is considered one of boxing’s finest technicians and boasts dominant stoppages of Michael Zerafa and Danny Garcia in his two most recent title defences.
