A man has been shot dead in public carpark in southwest Sydney.
The shooting happened in the carpark of a community centre in the suburb of Punchbowl, about 5.5pm, a NSW Police spokesperson said.
The man died at the scene, and police say a vehicle reportedly sped away from the scene.
The man was shot in the carpark of the Punchbowl Community Centre on Rossmore Ave, Punchbowl.
Footage circulating on social media shows police officers trying to do CPR, with two people nearby praying. The footage shows school students watching from the edge of the carpark.
Images from the scene show the blue and red lights of emergency vehicles flooding the carpark, as paramedics tend to a person on the ground in full view of bystanders.
The Punchbowl Community Centre is a few hundred metres from the Punchbowl Station, and shares a street with St Jerome’s Catholic Primary School and St Jerome’s Catholic Church.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports witness claims that the man was shot beside a white sedan at the carpark entry, at a time when the carpark was full.
Paramedics treated the man but he could not be revived.
The Daily Telegraph reports multiple shots were fired.
Multiple police cars and ambulances were called to the area, as well as the police helicopter.
Last week, two men were fatally shot in separate cases which police suspect were mistaken identity, and the men were killed instead of intended criminal figures.
On Monday, the state government announced its third crackdown on organised crime in two years, promising tighter targeting of offshore criminal kingpins and the people organising young criminals to carry out hits, robberies and attacks.
The crackdown included laws for tougher penalties on teenagers involved in gang-related firebombings and shootings.
