NFL reporter Grant Cohn has been on an Aussie culture quest since arriving Down Under to cover Friday’s blockbuster NFL game at the MCG, and selected one of the nation’s most polarising delicacies as the subject of his latest food diary entry.
Cohn arrived just hours before the Carlton vs Geelong elimination final last Friday, and has since given his take on footy stars, as well as such local culinary favourites as coffee, kebabs, and fish and chips.
On Wednesday, the vocal journo decided to offer his “honest assessment of Vegemite” in a clip shared to Instagram.
“I’ve been putting this one off because I figured if it was really, really good, we’d have it in America,” he began.
“So the fact that we don’t means it’s probably an acquired taste.”
Cohn had earlier advised his legion of online fans that he would be taste-testing the controversial spread, and said he had since been inundated with messages from Aussies warning him to go heavy on the butter, and light on the Vegemite.
Displaying a piece of toast with a reasonable serving of the black gold, the American took an anxious bite.
“It is pungent,” he said upon first taste, “it’s definitely not Nutella.”
“I like it.”
Cohn quickly took a second bite as he attempted to identify the yeast extract’s unique flavour profile.
Following positive reviews of Melbourne coffee, battered shark, and an “incredible” kebab, fans should have expected a similarly positive reaction from the California native.
“It’s good! Okay, it reminds me of like Bullion, or chicken stock, or MSG,” he continued.
“A lot of people think MSG is taboo, don’t want it in their food. I love MSG, I can’t get enough! That’s the flavour.
“This is great, we should have this in America.”
Cohn said he enjoyed the “savouriness,” and felt the product complemented the “toast and butter experience”.
The outspoken reporter said he would recommend Vegemite to other Americans he felt would enjoy it, should they be travelling to Australia.
Impressed by the quality of fast food he has tried while on our shores, Cohn recently described a seafood banquet as “by far the best fish and chips I’ve ever had”.
On another occasion, he purchased a lamb and chicken kebab with “special” sauce that elicited perhaps his most overwhelming reaction.
“The range of emotions I’ve experienced eating this . . . I went from euphoria to utter depression that I can’t ever have this again,” he said.
As a reporter of the San Francisco 49ers NFL team, Cohn will be closely following their game against the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG on Friday morning.
