More information has come to light about the late Dolly Parton’s battle with cancer.
The legendary singer died in Nashville on August 25 at the age of 80.
In a statement to People at the time, Parton’s representatives confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer, although the specific type has not been disclosed.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched,” the statement read.
“Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.
“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.”
In a sit-down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, sister Stella said the Jolene singer opted to keep her cancer battle private, and that even extended to her family.
“She did not want people sad,” Stella said.
“She did not want people worried.
“She’d be really happy and delighted that people have shown her so much love because she knew that that would make us feel better as her family.
“Bottom line, end of the day, her family and (late husband) Carl’s family and probably (best friend) Judy’s family are the people that she would want to say, ‘See, everything I did, they cared. They really loved me.’.”
Stella said only “some” of the family were aware of the diagnosis, mostly those “that were closer” with the singer.
“Dolly could not bear negative things,” Stella told King.
“And she would not have wanted her fans worried about it.”
So far, only snippets of the interview have been released, with the full recording expected to air on September 10 in the US.
The teaser comes as a museum dedicated to the country singer and actress, Dolly’s Life of Many Colours Museum, prepares to opens its doors to the public on September 29.
In a statement from the singer shared on the museum’s Instagram page on Thursday, more information was revealed about the 20,000 square foot site.
“It’s my story, my songs, and the rhinestones and the grindstones that have made up my journey all under one roof,” Dolly Parton said.
“This museum will be the largest exhibit of my life and career to date filled with the stories, songs and memories that I’ve carried.
“It includes all of the things that have helped this little girl’s dreams come true.”
