Former bikie turned journalist Mahmood Fazal has dropped an unfair dismissal case against the ABC in the Fair Work Commission.
Fazal was sacked by the public broadcaster in May following an internal investigation into his podcast appearance with former underworld figure Ryan Naumenko in 2025.
His matter was due to be heard in the Fair Work Commission on Thursday but was no longer listed.
An ABC spokesman said Fazal was no longer pursuing action against them.
“The ABC is aware Mahmood Fazal is not pursuing his claim with the Fair Work Commission,” a spokesman said.
Allegations emerged that Fazal used the same masked anonymous source under different aliases in several stories he produced for Four Corners and Background Briefing.
An ABC internal review found Fazal did not follow policies concerning the use of anonymous interviewees to a level that met its editorial standards.
“Therefore, in order to ensure complete confidence in published content, we have taken the decision to remove them (Fazal’s stories),” the ABC said in a statement.
Fazal is an award-winning journalist and a former bikie club member who reported on crime, violence and terrorism.
He defended his work, saying he stood by his stories and sources.
“I’ve been trying to stay quiet and do my own thing and just move on with my life,” he said.
“But they just keep going on attacking me, my work, my sources and apparently I’m the one that’s betrayed the ABC. I mean seriously.”
