Catherine Zeta-Jones believes “working” is the key to her long-lasting marriage to Michael Douglas.
The couple – who have children Dylan, 26, and 23-year-old Carys together – tied the knot in 2000, but the Kill Jackie actress doesn’t believe they would have stayed together for so long if they didn’t spend so much time away from the family home shooting their respective movies and TV shows.
She explained to The Sunday Times Culture magazine: “Michael is, like, ‘Go and do that job, that’s amazing.’ And then he’s able to fly in and see me for a long weekend. Much better than waking up, going, ‘What do you want for breakfast, honey?’ I don’t think our marriage would ever have lasted if it was like that.”
Catherine, 56, and Michael, 81, moved to Bermuda when they had their children because life in the spotlight was tough.
She said: “It was really hard when I had my babies.
“Living in New York, pushing them to kindergarten, it was really hard because you’ve got [photographers] jumping on the underground with us, and it was awful. That’s when Michael and I made the decision to go to Bermuda and school them there, the best thing we ever did.”
Both Dylan and Carys are “plugging away” at forging their own acting careers, and the Wednesday star thinks the “nepo baby” tag brings added pressure and unfair expectations.
She said: “My daughter wanted to be Amal Clooney for a while. But you have to go with your dreams, your passion.
“It’s hard for them to forge a way forward on their own. This horrific phrase ‘nepo baby’ is horrible because these kids didn’t ask to be born into this, they’re finding their own way in life. But they love it, and they’re good. Otherwise, Michael and I would be the first to go, ‘You know what? Maybe law school looks really good.’”
Meanwhile, Catherine was raised in Wales and is a Swansea City fan – but has rejected repeated approaches to appear on Welcome to Wrexham, the reality show about the Championship side backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
She said: “You know they’ve asked me three times to be on the Wrexham show?
“I am from Swansea. How the hell can I walk down the street if I’m on Welcome to Wrexham?”
