Carly Rae Jepsen “didn’t always think” getting married and having children “was on the cards” because of her career.

The Call Me Maybe hitmaker married Cole M.G.N., whose real name is Cole Marsden Greif-Neill, last October and they welcomed their first child, a son, into the world in March, but she admitted that for a long time she just had an idea she should be an “observer of life” rather than actively engage in building relationships.

Admitting she “didn’t always think [motherhood] was on the cards”, Carly told the Guardian newspaper: “I always had this very clear vision for my life; that I was on a mission to make music, and that was, for a very long time, my priority. Similar with getting married.

“All of these things were nice, hypothetical ideas that belonged to other people. Maybe I almost romanticise this idea that, as an artist, it was more my job to be an observer of life than to wildly participate.”

The 40-year-old star has never been happier or “more terrified” since becoming a parent.

She said: “At this stage in my life, I feel much more comfortable with the parts that I don’t have full control over.

“There is nothing more vulnerable than having a child. It’s this whole heartbeat that breathes outside you. I’ve never been happier and more terrified – but I feel very, very alive.”

Carly recently explained she thinks she has found “the sweet spot” between success and getting to “live a life”.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: “Where I’ve landed now in my career is the sweet spot.

“I can live a life, go to the grocery store, have a family, tour music that I love and have an audience.

“That’s a very hard-earned, balanced thing that we’ve had to work at.”

Reflecting on her rise to fame 15 years ago, the singer insisted the intensity of her experiences means she can relate to celebrities “in that space consistently”.

She explained: “It was so overnight that I feel like I understand what it must be like for some people who live in that space consistently, and my heart goes out to them.”

Carly noted that some stars might feel like they can adjust to sudden success, but it wasn’t for her.

She added: “I’m just not very good at it.”

Instead, the I Really Like You star found herself trying to stay grounded and focus on the music.

She said: “In the moment, it was happening rather fast. If I’m being honest, I felt a little voice from inside screaming at me to hold on to why I started.”
