Good morning and welcome to our live blog of the 78th annual primetime Emmy Awards – or as I like to call them, the American Logies.
I’ll be your live blog host, while deputy Lifestyle editor Courtney Thompson will be taking us through the best looks from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, and Lifestyle writer Abby Seaman will be combing through the photos for our red carpet gallery. On the ground, Culture Editor-at-Large Michael Idato will be giving us a front-row seat to the awards (OK, he’s actually in row L, but it’s closer than I’ll ever be). Once the awards kick off, Deputy TV editor Meg Watson and Culture writers Karl Quinn and Nell Geraets will be blogging their way through the event. You can check out the full list of nominees here.
The morning will go something like this:
- Red carpet from 8am.
- Live broadcast starts at 10am on Binge, hosted by Law and Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay.
- Presenters include Zendaya, Amy Poehler, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Emmy Rossum, John Mulaney, Macaulay Culkin, Alan Cumming, Jon Hamm, David Harbour, Dan Levy, Julianna Margulies and Florence Pugh.
- The evening will also feature a 30th anniversary celebration of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, and a 50th anniversary celebration of Charlie’s Angels with Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith.

Ahead of today’s Emmy Awards, our Culture Editor-at-Large Michael Idato had a sneak peek at the official gifting suite, where presenters, performers and nominees can pick up a goodie bag filled with about $US28,000 – that’s about $39, 260 – worth of goodies. According to USA Today, this year’s gift bags include sessions with a life coach, lip volumiser and a drink holder (if those three things don’t neatly sum up Hollywood, I don’t know what does).
(And if you think that’s pricey, the gift bags at this year’s Oscars were worth about $US350,000 and included a stay at Lapland, a “facial rejuvenation procedure” and pretzels topped with edible gold crystals.)
While might seem like American television’s night of nights is one long night, the truth is, it’s three, if you include the two-night Creative Arts Emmys, which were held earlier this month. The Creative Arts Emmys are where a lot of the less high-profile categories are dealt it, so the main “primetime” Emmys can focus on drama, comedy and limited series, and the top-line acting categories.
Australia actually put on a big show at the Creative Arts Emmys, with a raft of nominations in animation, special effects, casting and cinematography.
Among our nominees: animator Michael Cusack for his animated Smiling Friends, commercial director Kim Gehrig for a Levi jeans TV ad, special effects supervisor Marc Varisco for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, casting director Jane Norris for All Her Fault, cinematographer Geoff Thomas for the US version of Love on the Spectrum, producer Cian O’Clery for cinematography and directing for Love on the Spectrum.
