Fremantle midfielder Caleb Serong has revealed the “bittersweet” moment that nearly brought him to tears after the Dockers’ epic preliminary finals triumph.
The men in purple produced their greatest three-quarter time comeback of all time, 21 points, to seal a place in just their second grand final at the SCG on Friday night.
But as his teammates relished in the ecstasy of reaching the big dance, Serong took a moment to pause for his brother Jai, who was one of the Swans’ best in the gutsy 12-point defeat.
“Being completely honest, he was the first one I saw on the siren,” he told Seven in the rooms.
“I almost wanted to cry, it was so bittersweet. I didn’t know what to say to him.”
Serong collected 28 disposals and 10 clearances for the Dockers and could have three goals, while his brother also had 23 touches, six tackles and five clearances.
At one stage in the first half, the brothers were the leading clearance winners on the ground.
Serong revealed his immense pride in his younger brother after making the move from Hawthorn, who the Dockers could meet next week at the MCG, to the Swans and flourishing.
“I’m so proud of what he’s done and what he’s achieved. I tune in every single week, I love watching him play,” he said.
“He’s had a tough four years, he’s battled away and then to get his opportunity at the Swans, he loves it up here.
“They’re a great football club as well. I couldn’t be prouder of the way he played tonight and this season, but I am glad we are playing in a grand final.”
Serong also celebrated his 150th game in the preliminary final, the 26th Docker to reach the milestone.
Fremantle now await the winner of Saturday’s final between Hawthorn, who became the only team to beat them in Western Australia this season in the qualifying final, or reigning premiers Brisbane.
