A small group of Perth daredevils were given a thrilling taste of what’s in store when dozens of supercars roar into Perth for a first of its kind fundraising event.
And they only had one thing to say: “best thing ever”.
Six children from the Telethon community got up close with some of the Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche vehicles set to take over Motormall Raceway for the inaugural Supercar Sunday on October 4.
The family-friendly event, being staged by Motormall Raceway, will combine high-performance cars and motorsport action with entertainment, all in support of Telethon.
For kids from 12Buckets — a Telethon-supported program providing extra support and guidance to teenagers experiencing disadvantage throughout their high school years — the experience was a chance to get behind the scenes of a world many would otherwise never experience.
12Buckets chief executive Larissa Muir said the excitement among the young people was palpable from the moment they arrived.
“On the drive up here, we had a good 30 minutes and the excitement, not a lot of words were being said, but you could just feel the excited energy,” she said.
“As soon as we drove in through the driveway, everybody just turned through the windows and was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I can’t believe we’re here.’
“They were just so excited to be so close to Lamborghinis, McLarens, being able to talk to the car owners and getting more information about them.”
Among the children taking in the experience was 12-year-old George Olsen, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2025 and now a Telethon Community Fundraiser.
Now in remission, George has returned to playing football after missing an entire season while undergoing treatment — and has been helping his club raise money for Telethon.
His team’s Goals for Good fundraiser has raised more than $8514, with every goal kicked triggering a $20 donation through a partnership with Revo Fitness.
George said seeing so many luxury sports cars in one place was an experience he would not forget.
“It’s been amazing. I don’t think I’ve seen this many supercars, let alone Lambos, Ferraris, McLarens in one place, so it’s been really amazing,” he said.
“They’re just driving past me now, they are pretty damn fast. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the car that fast.”
George said Supercar Sunday would be a must for anyone who loved cars.
“If you like cars, this is the place for you, there are so many loud fast cars, and the fact that you get an opportunity to be in one of them and do some hot laps, I think it’s just amazing,” he said.
“And raising money for Telethon each lap is just another great reason to come down here.”
The event will feature about 70 supercars on the track, with members of the public aged 14 and over able to experience hot laps in some of the rare and expensive machines.
Motormall Raceway owner Ashley Sewell said the cars taking part would range in value from about $200,000 to $1 million.
“We’ve also got 15 of the best drifters in Western Australia drifting on the track as well and also doing passenger rides,” he said.
Sewell said partnering with Telethon was a way to combine his passion for cars with giving back to the community.
“The reason we wanted to partner with Telethon was because they support over 100 charities and our target is to raise $50,000,” he said.
“I’ve come from a family with four brothers and this was a dream for us when we were kids and to be able to give back to people and to the Telethon kids by sharing our passion has always been a big goal of mine and my brothers.”
The day will also feature motocross stunt displays, drifting, bouncy castles, food trucks and other family entertainment.
For some of the children who got a sneak peek at the hot lap experience, the thrill of the day was difficult to put into words.
“That was awesome. Bestest thing I’ve ever done. I will come here again,” Benjamen Porter said.
“I loved it, I want to come with all my family members and friends so they can experience it too.”
Alexander English described the ride as “the experience of a lifetime”.
“I don’t even know what the best part was, the whole thing,” he said.
“I went so fast, it was wicked.”
Supercar Sunday will be held at Motormall Raceway on Sunday, October 4, with gates opening at 10am.
One hundred per cent of proceeds from general admission tickets will go directly to Telethon, while $50 from every supercar and drift hot lap experience will also be donated.
