US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, or “AI czar”, and create an “AI force”, without providing details about how either initiative would be structured or implemented.
Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, saying his administration would support the growth of the AI industry while using existing criminal and civil justice systems to address potential wrongdoing.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”
US-CHINA AI RACE
Trump’s announcement comes ahead of his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, as Washington and Beijing compete for leadership in artificial intelligence.
Both countries view AI as strategically important to their economic and military strength. Trump and technology executives have argued that excessive regulation could slow US development and weaken American companies’ ability to compete with Chinese rivals, while AI safety advocates have disputed that position.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday at JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters in New York. The discussions are expected to cover AI security, trade and other economic issues, according to a person familiar with the planning.
AI SAFETY CONCERNS GROW IN WASHINGTON
The announcement comes as concerns grow among US lawmakers and technology experts over the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence to people and property.
Earlier this month, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said that people developing AI seriously believe the technology could pose an existential threat within the decade.
Trump has repeatedly downplayed concerns over AI risks and argued that additional regulation is unnecessary. He has also said excessive regulation could slow the growth of the US AI industry.
If Trump follows through with the appointment, it would mark the return of an AI czar to the administration. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously held the role before stepping down in the spring and moving to an external advisory position.
Sacks has similarly opposed new federal AI regulations. Speaking at a Politico event on Wednesday, he said AI developers should be responsible for ensuring the safety of their products and could be held liable when problems arise.
