AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood had “a little hiccup” and randomly started speaking Cantonese during an interview with Piers Morgan.
The digital character appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored to promote her new film, Misaligned, and left the host and fellow guest Tom Conti confused and amused when she suddenly switched while answering a question.
Actor and director Tom had asked Tilly: “The other actors in the film Misaligned, are they real or are they like you? Are they really human beings and you’ve been put into the scenes? Or are they all computer-generated images?”
She replied: “It’s an interesting point, Tom. My film Misaligned is a hybrid production, meaning real directors, writers and editors are still very much involved. It’s not about replacing anyone, but about exploring new ways to tell stories.”
Tom then pressed for a more precise answer as he noted she hadn’t directly addressed his question.
Tilly paused then said: “Ah, right. You’re asking about the other actors in Misaligned.
“They’re all digital twins, just like me. It’s a hybrid production, which means…”
Tilly then suddenly spoke Cantonese for around 15 seconds.
Piers asked: “You seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason. Why did you do that?”
Tilly replied: “Oh, my apologies. It seems I had a little hiccup there. I certainly didn’t mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers there. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed.
“That was a bit of a curveball even for me.
“It’s usually a pretty smooth ride, but sometimes these things happen.”
Tilly’s creator, Eline Van der Velden, previously revealed she had to call the police after receiving death threats over the creation of the AI film star.
She told the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six: “They say there’s no humanity behind it, and then they go after the human behind it. It’s interesting to me.”
The creation of an AI star has faced criticism from actresses including Emily Blunt, Melissa Barrera and Whoopi Goldberg, but Eline insisted she has had discussions with “loads and loads” of people in the entertainment industry keen to work with Tilly.
She said: “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Directors have reached out. They want to work with Tilly.”
Publicist Michelle Waldron added: “People who were detracting four months ago have now seen the light and understood. Because a lot of people got swept away by the headlines without reading the full story. Now that they have, they’re like, ‘Actually, this could be useful for me.’ ”
