Jesse Metcalfe believes there is still an “appetite” for a John Tucker Must Die sequel.
The 47-year-old actor starred as the titular teen heartbreaker in the 2006 cult teen comedy and while there has been a follow-up in development, his co-star Arielle Kebbel revealed earlier this year it is “on pause for now”, and while he is unsure if the film will ever get made, Jesse thinks it would be a “fun” project to be a part of.
Speaking at a New York Fashion Week event earlier this month, People magazine reports he said: “There is a sequel script over at 20th Century Fox that Arielle was attempting to spearhead.
“It seems to have lost a little momentum, but I like the script, and I do think there’s an appetite for a sequel. I don’t necessarily know if it’s going to get over the finish line or not, and I’m not really losing any sleep over it, but it would certainly be fun to participate in that.”
Arielle, 41, had previously revealed she was working on a sequel which “does involve all of the O.G. cast,” but in February she admitted it had been “shelved”, though she still has “faith” the film will be resurrected some day.
Speaking on the Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe podcast, she said: “We worked with the studio for a while, and then we got a script in right before the writers’ strike.
“Then post-writers’ strike we were supposed to pick up and full-force move forward into casting and ready to rock, and their slate totally changed. You know, that happens.
“That’s the game with studios and the film business. But it got ‘shelved,’ which is not a permanent thing, but it is not currently active. I have faith, you know? The moment will come. But it’s on pause for now.”
Jesse previously revealed he’d like to help drive the project forward.
He told Us Weekly magazine: “I’ve recently inquired about an update and I honestly don’t believe there are [any].
“People are still talking about it. I’d love to help push it forward, but I don’t really know how to do that.”
The Desperate Housewives actor also admitted he’d embrace the idea of John having a teenage daughter in the sequel.
Asked who he’d like to see play his daughter, he said: “Honestly, I’m not that well-versed in actors in that age range, so I’d have to do some research on that and get back to you.
“But it’s a fun opportunity to work with a talented, young, up-and-coming actress, that’s for sure.
“I really liked all of the ladies that I worked with. I really did. I thought they were all great and unique in their own ways. I guess the one common denominator for all of them is that they’re all very intelligent.”
The original 2006 movie saw jock hunk John Tucker in trouble after three girls – played by Arielle, Sophia Bush and Ashanti – find out he has secretly been dating all three of them.
They put together a scheme to get new girl Kate (Brittany Snow) to seduce and eventually break his heart in a bid for revenge.
