A scorching Sydney day has been turned on its head after a sudden southerly wiped out 10C of heat within 30 minutes.
Observatory Hill reached 28.9C at 9am on Monday – making it the highest Spring reading in 17 years – while other areas in Sydney’s west recorded temperatures of 35C and above, Weatherzone reports
In Sydney’s west, the temperature in Richmond fell from 35.4C to 25.3C just after midday on Monday.
Closer to the coast, Sydney Airport dropped from 31.6C to 21.9C within 30 minutes about 10.10am.
Dean Narramore, a meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, said a large high-pressure systems over southeastern Australia was brining warm, dry and sunny conditions across most of the nation.
He said a few coastal showers from Sydney to the Gold Coast were expected on Tuesday, along with rain and thunderstorms through inland Western Australia.
The bureau forecasts temperatures to reach the mid to high 30s in central parts of Queensland, but will be in the high 20s along the coast on Tuesday.
Warmer conditions in the low 30s and showers are expected around mid to northern NSW coastal areas throughout the day but should clear in the evening.
Southern parts of NSW will be cooler with Sydney reaching 19C and Canberra 16C on Tuesday.
Victoria will have a cool and frosty start to the day but will clear to a dry and sunny day with temperatures ranging from the high teens to 20C.
Showers could hit southern Tasmania on Tuesday morning but will be dry and cloudy across the state with temperatures in the west reaching the low teens, and slightly warmer conditions in the east.
South Australia will be dry and sunny across the state with temperatures ranging fr0m the high teens to low 20s.
It will be dry and partly cloudy along the Western Australia’s coastline with temperatures reaching the low 20s in the southwest and mid to high 20s further north and east.
Northern parts of the Pilbara are expected to hit the high 30s.
The Top End, including the Kimberley, will reach the mid to high 30s.
