Three players could make their Matildas debut next month after being named in Australia’s squad for friendly internationals against Germany and Haiti.
Uncapped trio Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon, defender Tori Tumeth (Vancouver Rise, Canada) and midfielder Hana Lowry (Valerenga IF, Norway) could be given game time by Matildas coach Joe Montemurro as he continues to build depth ahead of next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“With limited windows left, every match is an important part of our (World Cup) preparation,” Montemurro said.
“We want to use these games to strengthen our connections, build confidence and continue developing as a team.
“We have a good mix of experience, players returning to the squad and players earning their first senior call-ups, which is important as we build towards the Women’s World Cup.”
Recalled to the 26-player squad are defenders Charli Grant (Malmo FF, Sweden) and Alexia Apostolakis (Bristol City, England) and midfielder Daniela Galic (Vittsjo GIK, Sweden).
Injured pair Alanna Kennedy (London City, England) and Charlize Rule (Brighton and Hove Albion, England) will miss the games, as will midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross (Arsenal, England) as she continues her return to football after a period away from the sport.
The Matildas will meet Germany on October 10 (AEDT) in Karlsruhe before travelling to France to meet Haiti on October 14 (AEDT).
“The two matches will offer us very different challenges,” Montemurro said.
“Germany will test us against one of Europe’s leading teams, while Haiti will provide a different style and perspective. Both will be valuable.”
