Derby rivalries are still running deep on grand final day, with West Coast’s Willem Duursma saying the Eagles are living ‘rent-free’ in Dockers heads as they chase their first flag.
Fremantle will have to overcome reigning back-to-back premiers Brisbane on Saturday to end their 32-year wait, with an army of fans making the trip to Melbourne.
As they dare to dream, they couldn’t help but take a shot at their lowly crosstown rivals in the Eagles as they continue to struggle with a lengthy rebuild.
In particular, they took aim at West Coast villain Harley Reid, with fans heard chanting ‘Harley’s in Bali, Murphy’s at the G’ as Murphy Reid prepares for a grand final in just his second AFL season.
The chant did not go unnoticed by Harley’s housemate and fellow Eagles star Willem Duursma, who commented, ‘Rent free’ on the post, which received more than 2000 likes, referencing how on the biggest day in Fremantle’s history Harley Reid is still front of mind.
Duursma will be at the MCG on Saturday as West Coast’s champion for the grand final spring at half-time.
It’s a rare sight for a No.1 draft pick to be taking part in the sprint, with Duursma looking to emulate Brett Deledio from 2005 in taking out the race. Like Duursma, Deledio competed in the race at the end of his debut campaign, and remains the sole top draft pick to win.
