Motorists were stranded for nearly two hours on the Bruce Highway after a truck rear-ended another truck, trapping and severely injuring the driver, on Saturday afternoon.
A crane truck rear-ended a Linfox truck shortly after 1pm in the far left southbound lane of the highway at Banya near Caloundra.
Police were on the scene working to divert traffic. Multiple ambulance and fire crews were also responding to the incident.
“The traffic was slowing and the truck tried to brake, and he swerved to the left to try to avoid the truck in front,” a woman who witnessed the collision said.
“But he didn’t, and crashed into the back of him.”
Highway traffic parted to allowed three ambulances, two MICA (mobile intensive care ambulance) vehicles, three fire trucks and five police vehicles to access the crash scene.
The crash brought southbound traffic to a standstill for nearly two hours.
Dozen of motorists stepped out of their cars and walked along the highway as emergency services treated the injured driver.
The truck driver needed to be freed from his crumpled cabin by firefighters, before he was treated by MICA paramedics on the road and then on board a LifeFlight helicopter that landed on the highway.
Once the man was stabilized on board the helicopter, he was flown to hospital.
The right lane of the highway was reopened to traffic about 2.50pm.
