A section of scaffolding has crashed onto parked cars at a Sydney building site, leaving residents shaken after the structure gave way in windy conditions on Saturday evening.
No-one was injured when scaffolding fell on Wattle St in Ultimo just before 6.45pm, according to SafeWork NSW, but several vehicles were damaged and the site is now under investigation.
Security footage captured the moment the structure collapsed, with the falling scaffolding narrowly missing people on the street.
SafeWork NSW confirmed inspectors attended the scene and issued regulatory notices, including a prohibition notice to the site managers.
For neighbours, the noise was the first sign something had gone badly wrong.
Lisa, who lives a few doors from the site, told the ABC she heard a loud crash and initially thought metal was being dragged along the road.
“There was a bit of wind, and there was a loud sound of metal on the road,” she said.
It was only after checking her security footage that she realised the scaffolding at the front of the building had come down.
“I think the structure they had on the front of the building wasn’t secure,” she said.
“The scaffolding and the additional panels that they placed to prevent any bricks from going over it when they demolished subsequently was … not secured, and then fell on the road.”
Lisa said she was relieved no-one was hurt, but there would still be costs for those whose cars were damaged.
The building, formerly a rehearsal studio, has been approved for demolition to make way for a multistorey mixed-use development.
The collapse comes after another serious incident at the same site last month, when part of a wall and roof fell onto a nearby petrol station and seriously injured two men.
SafeWork NSW is also investigating that incident.
