Just over two months since duelling with each other in the Wimbledon final, Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova have teamed up to win the Billie Jean King Cup for Czechia.
Wimbledon champ Noskova and the beaten finalist Muchova each won their singles matches on Sunday as the Czechs beat Ukraine 2-0 in the final of the team event that’s known as the World Cup of women’s tennis.
Noskova, the world No.6, sealed it by beating the seventh-ranked Elina Svitolina 6-3 7-6 (7-5) after Muchova had defeated 47th-ranked Anhelina Kalinina 6-2 6-3.
Czechia earned their 12th title in the competition previously called the Fed Cup — and a first crown since 2018. Only the United States have won more with 18.
Czech captain Barbora Strycova became the fourth woman to win the competition as both a player and a captain, joining Margaret Court, Chris Evert and event namesake Billie Jean King.
Strycova won three titles with Czechia as a player before assuming the captaincy this year.
Czechia, who had shut out Britain in the quarter-finals and Spain in the semi-finals, were so dominant with their singles players that their world No.1 doubles star Katerina Siniakova never even had to play over the week in China.
At Wimbledon, Noskova beat Muchova for her first grand slam title.
But the Czech victory ended the fairytale of Ukraine’s run to their first ever final after they’d beaten two-time defending champions Italy in the semis, but being without their injured world No.10 Marta Kostyuk proved a hurdle too far.
