The Chief Electoral Officer ( CEO ) has issued a warning to Electoral Registration Officers ( EROs ) to use a comprehensive checklist before flagging a voter as “ineligible” or removing their name completely from the electoral rolls in the national capital as part of the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls.
In a text released on Friday, September 25, Delhi CEO Ashok Kumar instructed employees to follow a 10-point schedule before marking voters, and he urged them to refrain from deleting their names on “flimsy or silly grounds.” But, it’s not clear what those premises mean.
EROs informed The Hindu that they could declare a voter unsuitable on the Election Commission of India’s software for either of two reasons: either by stating that the man had missed their receiving after numerous postponing attempts, or by failing to submit documents in accordance with verification standards.
According to the report, an ERO will mark a voting as unsuitable once the status has reached a point where the officers or CEO can no longer challenge it, requiring intervention through higher legislative appeals or courts.
The CEO’s warning to all district election officers and EROs on Friday stated that officials may strictly limit the number of times an elector is marked as unsuitable when they fail to meet one of the legal requirements set forth in Article 324.
