Mick Foley got rejected after his first ever date because he was too “weird”.
The WWE Hall of Famer is one of the most recognisable names in wrestling history, but he as recalled a heartbreaking moment he got a date after quickly falling head over heels for a girl he knew.
He told the Big Issue magazine: “I had my first date at 17 and I had an amazing time. I may have fallen in love in one day.
“I had the presence of mind to take my first date to First Blood with Sylvester Stallone. not exactly, a rom com, right?
“The next day, a couple of my friends asked her how it went. She said, ‘I really like him, but I hear he’s weird.’ “
A couple of days after their first date, Mick – who wrestled as Mankind, Cactus Jack and Dude Love – received a phone call.
He said: “She asked me if I was sitting down, and she gently broke my heart.
“Since then, I’ve come to realise that all of the things that made me seem strange in high school made me successful in wrestling.
“I would tell my younger self to embrace those things that made me different.”
While that romance didn’t blossom, Mick has enjoyed over three decades of marriage with his wife Colette, after they tied the knot back in 1992.
The 61-year-old star, who now works as a broadcaster for WWE rivals All Elite Wrestling (AEW), has urged his fans to take a chance and just tell someone if they have feelings for them.
He pondered: “I would also tell my younger self that is no law against telling a young lady that you’re interested in that you’re interested in them, instead of waiting for some type of defining classic moment to unfold, like From Here To Eternity, where you’re rolling around in the surf.
“That doesn’t need to happen. You could put it out there. You could actually talk to a woman.
“For someone who was supposed to be fearless in the ring – I wasn’t fearless, I was scared all the time – I displayed courage, action in the face of fear, in my wrestling career.
“But not on the social level.”
Meanwhile, Mick recently admitted he isn’t ruling out one more match with AEW after getting himself into incredible shape.
He told the Metro: “There’s a big difference between dropping 110 pounds and being in ring shape…
“There’s the chance of doing something cinematic. There’s a chance of being in something like the Stadium [Stampede], where I could shine during small parts.
“I do not know if I’m capable of participating in an AEW type of main event match. I really don’t think I am. But we’re going to see how the conditioning goes. We’ll see. We will see if the stars align. It might happen!”
