A massive whale carcass that’s attracted great white sharks dangerously close to shore is set to be removed this morning.
The 13-metre carcass washed up south of City Beach yesterday morning, bringing with it multiple great white sharks, including one that was five metres long, and swimming just 10 metres offshore.
The Town of Cambridge will remove the carcass today. It’s expected the animal will be scooped up and taken to landfill.
The beach remains closed in the meantime as the carcass continues to attract sharks.
Here’s what’s happening across the nation and around the world today:
- A near-record tax haul under Labor has added to scrutiny of its fiscal management ahead of a widely expected rate hike on Tuesday as Treasurer Jim Chalmers pins the blame on Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East rather than wage earners fuelling inflation.
- Petrol and diesel prices in Australia have climbed to their highest average levels since April amid doubts over whether Iran and the United States will agree to a truce any time soon.
- SpaceX launched its enormous Starship into orbit for the first time on Monday and successfully delivered the most advanced Starlinks yet, but cut the flight short to ensure safety.
- British police have released five men they arrested over a suspected terror plot near a Royal Air Force base, setting off a political row over the nature of the threat and whether the men should be free in the community.
