Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday alleged that the violence at the University Men’s Hostel in Thiruvananthapuram was a “one-sided attack” by Youth Congress workers, and claimed that SFI members and other students staying in the hostel were targeted. He made the remarks after visiting the hostel shortly after the clash between two groups and the subsequent police action.
Vijayan claimed there was no provocation from the SFI side and said the attack was part of a pre-planned move. He also alleged that attempts were made to stop injured students from getting treatment at a hospital, and warned that if such violence continued, it could become a major threat to law and order in the state.

“It is clear to everyone here that a one-sided attack took place. There was no particular provocation from the SFI side. The SFI workers were inside the hostel. It was not only SFI workers but also students staying in the hostel who were there. The attack was against those students,” he claimed.
The former Chief Minister alleged that Youth Congress workers had surrounded the university hostel on several earlier occasions, and said Wednesday’s incident was part of the same pattern. “The flaming torches in their hands were thrown into the hostel. You have all seen this. The news channels have reported it. The police also have nothing else to say in this regard. It was a one-sided attack from the Youth Congress side,” the CPI(M) veteran claimed.
Vijayan further alleged that injured students were blocked from receiving treatment. “Not only did a one-sided attack take place from the Youth Congress side, there were also attempts to stop the injured when they were being taken to hospital. Those who went to the general hospital for admission were stopped there and Youth Congress workers did not allow them to enter,” he alleged.
He said there would naturally be strong protests across the state and added, “If this game is not stopped, it will become a major threat to law and order in our state.” The Youth Congress has not responded to the allegations.
