Como Secondary College student Shayne Lumsden finished his last day of Year 12 on cloud nine after hitting a hole-in-one during a school golf competition.
During the last round of his school’s Golf Specialist Program, the 18-year-old was in a pairs competition at Collier Park Golf Club, with the duo alternating back and forth each shot.
Lumsden was up to tee off on the course’s feature hole, the fifth on the Lakes, which provides a stunning par-3 where choppers have hit over the water onto the green.
With the pin tucked up at the front, the young golfer was just hoping to put his partner in a good position.
“We were playing an alternative shot competition with my schoolmates, off the red tees,” he said.
“I hit my pitching wedge because it was 97m out, the wind was into us.
“I aimed at the top right of the green and hoped to get it as close as possible to the hole for my partner.
“It landed on the green, kicked sharp left and went in the hole.”
The playing group erupted as the ball trickled into the hole, with Lumsden’s partner left in awe at his shot of a lifetime.
Although the 7 handicap said that they gave it back with a quad-bogey on the very next hole, finishing the day at three-over-par.
The teenager’s shot is one that golfers can only dream of and most go their entire life without ever experiencing the elation of an ace, but it is the second time Lumsden has achieved the feat.
His first came last year at his home track Rockingham Golf Club, but the aspiring club pro said his latest effort by far takes the cake.
“This was better because had my friends running up to come congratulate me, screaming . . . it’s a scenic hole as well,” Lumsden said.
“I actually couldn’t have asked for a better finish . . . I couldn’t believe it.”
The cherry on top was the camera set up on the hole to capture the moment, so Lumsden will forever have proof of his incredible shot.
