Of all the discussions around artificial intelligence and what it means for us, the impact of data centres, the physical facilities required to power AI, has become a focal point for many. Demand for them has been surging, as has the opposition, with red flags being raised about issues ranging from proximity to residential housing and noise pollution to demand on water supply. Our lead story today features a group of neighbours who banded together in a Sydney suburb to fight plans for a data centre. They are emblematic of communities around the world, from Virginia to Victoria, who are mobilising with good old-fashioned people power to ensure that technological advancement should enhance, not detract, from our quality of life. The power of community is also evident in the delightful story of Susan Downes. The GP obstetrician’s “vague retirement plan” to buy a rural property has evolved into an ambitious project to restore its native landscape by the end of the decade, supported by a network of nature-lovers. – Melissa Stevens, editor
